One Day Workshop on IFRS Controls and Risk Management

The Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI), Doha Chapter recently conducted a full day workshop on “IFRS, Controls and Risk Management”at the W Hotel, West Bay, Doha. The event was sponsored by Mashreq Bank and co-sponsored by QIC, KPMG,Galfar Al Misnad and W Hotel. Over 200 participants comprising members of the ICAI Doha/Bahrain Chapters, PICPA, IIA and SLACA attended the event.

The workshop was inaugurated by Mr. Ian Cannell, CFO–Qatar Foundation for Education, Science and Community Development. Three prominent experts delivered the workshop. Mr. Yusuf Hassan, Partner – Technical, KPMG presented the recent changes in IFRS that had a significant impact on organizations in the region. Mr. Tom Mc Hale, Group Finance Manager at Rasgas spoke on Basic Standards of Controls - essential for every organization. CA R. Vittal Raj, Director, Pristine Consulting Private Limited (India) shared his experience in implementing ERM using certain global practices, significant benefits and challenges in its implementation using case studies.

Inaugurating the seminar, Mr. Cannell said that the gamut of activities that a professional accountant is now responsible for is widening rapidly and therefore it is vital for the profession to keep abreast of all developments. He lauded the current and the past Excom members for their efforts to create and nourish a vibrant and dynamic organisation such as the ICAI Doha Chapter. Mr. Cannell also released the Chapter’s newsletter.

Mr. Tom McHale alongwith Mr. Bipin Shete, Regional Partner, BDO, inaugurated the Chapter’s new website.

ICAI Doha Chapter Chairman Girish Jain remarked, “The overwhelming turnout at this event, first of its kind ever for the Chapter, reflects the significance of the topics and the reputation of the speakers. We have received rave reviews from the participants and we are motivated to conduct more of such workshops in the future”.

Chapter Vice Chairman Venkat Ramamurthy said, “The speakers have left no stone unturned to provide insights into the three areas and provided the participants many takeaways. Topics such as IFRS 9 and ERM are better understood when these concepts are correlated with real life case studies and explained in layman terms”.

Chapter Secretary CA Valiyakath Sheji opened the workshop and welcomed the participants. Chairman CA Girish Jain steered the proceedings of the workshop. Vice Chairman CA Venkat Ramamurthy proposed the vote of thanks.
